Assessing Your Weight Status: Healthy Weight & BMI

Maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall well-being and reducing the risk of various chronic diseases. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a common screening tool used to categorize weight relative to height. This calculator determines your BMI and compares it to standard healthy weight ranges.

How to Use

  1. Select Metric or Imperial units.
  2. Enter your current Weight and Height.
  3. Select your Gender (used for context, not the core BMI calculation).
  4. Click "Check Healthy Weight Range".

The calculator displays your calculated BMI, the corresponding weight category (Underweight, Healthy, Overweight, Obesity), and the estimated weight range considered healthy (BMI 18.5-24.9) for your specific height.

BMI Calculation

BMI is calculated using weight and height:

  • **Metric:** BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m)]²
  • **Imperial:** BMI = [Weight (lbs) / [Height (in)]²] x 703

What is a "Healthy Weight"?

Generally, a BMI between **18.5 and 24.9** is considered within the healthy weight range for most adults. However, remember the limitations:

  • It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution.
  • Very muscular individuals might have a high BMI but be healthy.
  • Older adults might have normal BMI but higher body fat.

Therefore, BMI is a starting point. Your "healthy weight" also depends on factors like waist circumference, diet, activity level, genetics, and existing health conditions. Use this calculator as an initial screening tool and discuss your weight and health with your doctor.
