Calculating Your Grade Point Average (GPA)
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standard measure of academic achievement used by schools, colleges, and universities. It represents your average grade across all courses, weighted by the number of credits or hours each course is worth.
How to Use
- For each course you want to include, enter the Grade received (e.g., "A", "B-", "C+", or the numerical equivalent like "3.7" if you know it).
- Enter the number of Credits or Hours for that course.
- Use the "+ Add Course" button to add more rows as needed.
- Use the trash can button () to remove a row if added by mistake.
- Click "Calculate GPA".
The calculator assumes a standard US 4.0 grading scale (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0, with +/- variations) but will use numerical grades if entered directly. It calculates the total quality points (Grade Value * Credits) for each course, sums them up, and divides by the total number of credits attempted.
GPA Calculation Formula
GPA = (Total Quality Points) / (Total Credits Attempted)
Where Quality Points for a single course = (Numerical Grade Value) * (Course Credits)
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
This calculator computes an unweighted GPA by default (using the standard 4.0 scale). Weighted GPAs give extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses (e.g., an A might be worth 5.0 instead of 4.0). To calculate a weighted GPA using this tool, you would need to manually enter the *weighted* numerical grade value (e.g., 5.0, 4.5) in the grade field instead of the letter grade.
GPA is a key factor in academic standing, scholarship eligibility, and college/graduate school admissions.
