Working with Fractions
Fractions represent parts of a whole and are fundamental in mathematics, cooking, construction, and many other fields. Performing arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with fractions, especially mixed numbers (like 1 ¾), can require careful steps involving finding common denominators or converting formats.
How to Use
- Enter the first fraction or mixed number. For a proper/improper fraction, leave the "Whole" box empty or 0. Fill in the Numerator (top) and Denominator (bottom).
- Select the operation (+, -, ×, ÷).
- Enter the second fraction or mixed number similarly.
- Click "Calculate Fraction".
The result will be displayed as a simplified fraction or mixed number. The calculator handles converting mixed numbers to improper fractions for calculation and simplifying the result back.
Basic Fraction Operations
- Addition/Subtraction:** Requires finding a common denominator before adding/subtracting numerators.
- Multiplication:** Multiply numerators together and denominators together.
- Division:** Invert the second fraction (the divisor) and multiply.
Mixed numbers are converted to improper fractions (`(Whole * Denominator) + Numerator / Denominator`) before performing operations.
This tool simplifies these steps, providing quick and accurate fraction arithmetic.
