Estimating Calories Burned Through Activity

Calculating the number of calories burned during exercise and daily activities is helpful for weight management, fitness tracking, and understanding your overall energy expenditure. This calculator uses the concept of Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) to estimate calorie burn.

What is MET?

A MET value represents the ratio of the energy expended during an activity compared to the energy expended at rest. Resting quietly is defined as 1 MET. An activity with a MET value of 5 means you are burning five times the energy you would burn at rest.

How to Use

  1. Select the Activity you performed from the dropdown list. (The list contains various common exercises and activities with associated MET values).
  2. Choose the unit (kg or lbs) and enter your current Body Weight.
  3. Enter the Duration of the activity in minutes.
  4. Click "Calculate Calories Burned".

The result provides an estimate of the total calories burned during that specific activity session.

Formula Used

A common formula using MET values is:

Calories Burned per Minute = (MET Value * Body Weight in kg * 3.5) / 200

Total Calories Burned = Calories Burned per Minute * Duration in minutes

*(The calculator converts weight to kg if entered in lbs before applying the formula.)*

Accuracy Considerations

  • MET Values are Averages:** The MET values assigned to activities are averages based on research. Your actual energy expenditure can vary based on the intensity you perform the activity at, your fitness level, efficiency of movement, and environmental factors.
  • Individual Variation:** Basal metabolic rate and overall metabolism differ between individuals.
  • Intensity:** Performing an activity like "running" can range from a slow jog to a sprint. The calculator uses a standard MET value for the listed activity; adjust your expectations based on your actual effort level.

Use this calculator as a helpful estimate for comparing different activities and tracking general energy expenditure, but understand that it provides an approximation.
